Washington Business Journals fastest-growing banks by real estate lending
Ranked by Year-over-year change ($)
The banks in Greater Washington held more than $78.4 billion in total combined real estate loans as of Sept. 30, 2025, marking a 13.8% increase over what was reported in the year-earlier period.
This week’s List continues a shift in our research methodology and philosophy, one that emphasizes more data and context for readers while better coordinating the resources available to us and our 40-plus sister publications under the American City Business Journals flag. This effort identified thousands of new local records — and cumulatively, tens of thousands of new businesses across ACBJ’s footprint — last year alone.
Information on The List was obtained from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and could not be independently verified by the Washington Business Journal. Rankings were determined by year-over-year dollar value change in real estate loan portfolios in the period analyzed. In case of ties, banks are listed alphabetically.
To qualify for this List, banks are required to have a real estate lending balance at the end of the third quarter in 2025. Only institutions headquartered in Greater Washington are included.

Most Powerful Women in Washington 2025
We read, researched, and reached out to people in the know across the DC area, from business to media to politics, and asked for names of women in their particular field of expertise or beyond whom they considered powerful. Who is making things happen and having an impact? Who gets her calls (or texts or emails) returned immediately? Who is leading the way in her field? Who has senators on speed dial—and vice versa?
The list of nearly 250 women that follows includes a range of categories, with both those who are in the headlines—White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, for instance—as well as others pulling strings quietly behind the scenes. More than once, we heard from a source, “This is the most powerful woman you’ve never heard of.” Or “She won’t be on any other list but has real power.”
Some women in Washington have power by virtue of their position or their proximity or access to power. Some for their leadership. Some for their ability to mobilize vast networks and connections to make things happen. Some for the skill, expertise, or innovation they bring to their field.
Of course, politics tilts the scales here, especially in these acutely partisan times. That means the list right now includes many Republicans, especially Trump-aligned Republicans who are filling the majority of top government positions, as well as those from both parties who are pushing back against the MAGA agenda and making their voices heard. We know that some of the women on this list, especially those in the national spotlight, can be seen as controversial, polarizing figures. We don’t aim to pass judgment on the job they’re doing or whether they’re using their power to further the public good. We simply mean to present a snapshot of the women who, in the fall of 2025, are wielding—or in some cases challenging—the levers of power in the nation’s capital.
Revealed: The 2025 Fastest Growing Companies in Greater Washington
It’s time to meet 2025’s 75 Fastest Growing Companies based in Greater Washington.
These companies must pass a rigorous set of qualifications to make our List. They have to be locally headquartered, privately owned and willing to share revenue data. They had to have at least $2 million in 2022 revenue, at least $10 million in 2024 revenue, and have revenue growth for three years straight (no dips). We rank based on the average revenue growth during that time period.
Finalists for our List also met with a team of sponsor-judges, led by Richmond-based national accounting firm Cherry Bekaert Advisory LLC, who reached out to each company to check over their numbers in more detail for accuracy and consistency. The results of those meetings were shared with me before we finalized our List, concluding a monthslong vetting process.
Our 75 winners ranged in revenue from the minimum $10 million up to the billions — indeed, once again we have more than one billion-dollar company on our List this year. And it’s not all government technology contractors; we also have construction, architecture, health care, marketing, legal, finance and automotive industries represented this year.
You’ll learn much more about our winners when we reveal the rankings at our high-energy awards ceremony on Oct. 23 at the newly opened JW Marriott Reston Station and inside our special publication that week.

Virginia Business Women in Leadership Awards

Shaza Andersen could have opted for early retirement in 2018 when the holding company of the first bank she founded, WashingtonFirst Bank, was acquired by Sandy Spring Bancorp in a deal valued at $447 million. Instead, Andersen decided to do it over again and founded Fairfax County-based Trustar Bank, which opened in 2019 with nine employees. Today, the bank employs 66 people.
In March, Trustar Bank announced it had raised $16.7 million in its third oversubscribed stock offering. As of July, Trustar Bank reported total assets of $1.02 billion, with loans of $811 million and deposits of $858.5 million.
Andersen stays motivated at work by finding meaning outside financial reports. “Throughout my career, being purpose-driven has allowed me to feel fulfilled and stay motivated,” she says. “Whether that purpose is helping to sustain our local communities and businesses, investing in the growth and development of our team members or supporting those in need through corporate philanthropy.”
The Trustar Bank employee who nominated Andersen praised her servant leadership style.
“Since the day our doors opened, Shaza has made her team the priority,” her nominator says. “She goes out of her way to ensure that every person within the organization feels heard and knows that they are an important part of every success the company has.”
Andersen earned a degree in area studies from George Mason University in 1989 and received an honorary doctorate from her alma mater in 2021

Trustar Bank has made the Washington Business Journals list at number 9 for fastest growing banks by deposit in the DC area!
Trustar Bank raises $16.7M to fuel expansion
Trustar Bank in Great Falls raises $16.7M to fuel expansion
Andersen said Trustar needed to raise additional capital to keep pace with its rapid growth. Though less than 6 years old, Trustar has already surpassed the $1 billion-asset threshold, said Andersen, pointing out that WashingtonFirst — which she also founded — was half that size at the same stage.
Like many community banks, Trustar is primarily a real estate and small-business lender. It had $754 million in loans on its books at the end of 2024, up 26% from a year earlier, and of those, about $670 million were tied to commercial or residential real estate.
Significantly, the additional capital would allow Trustar to raise its legal lending limit from $11.5 million to about $15 million. “This means we’ll be able to make bigger loans and serve our customers in a much bigger way,” Andersen told me Thursday.
Andersen also wants to continue adding branches in the D.C. region, noting that physical branches are key to growing deposits and establishing and maintaining relationships with clients.
Trustar just opened a branch in Bethesda to go along with full-service branches in Great Falls, Reston and Tysons and appointment-only offices in D.C., Potomac and Arlington, and just recently won approval to open a full-service branch in Arlington, but Andersen said it’s not done.
“Face-to-face banking is important,” she said. “We want to be in every major hub in the Washington metropolitan area.”
An initial public offering could also be in Trustar’s future. Andersen, who took WashingtonFirst public in 2012, eight years after its founding, has previously said that Trustar would likely pursue an IPO, though she stressed Thursday her focus is to continue growing the bank’s customer base.
“I can’t make any promises” about what an IPO might happen, Andersen said. “But it won’t be in the near, near future.”
Trustar is the 30th-largest bank in Greater Washington based on metro-area deposits. It had total deposits of $794 million on Dec. 31, up 23% from a year earlier, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data.
Trustar Bank Branch Now Open in Arlington, VA
Trustar Bank Branch Now Open in Arlington, VA
Trustar Bank has opened its newest branch location, and first in Arlington, Virginia, at 3033 Wilson Blvd, Suite 700 Arlington VA 22201.
“We are excited to offer an in-person banking experience for our Arlington based customers.” stated Shaza Andersen, CEO of Trustar Bank. “This office will allow us to serve new and current clients who work or reside in the County and we look forward to strengthening our ties within the community.”
The location, situated in the heart of Clarendon, offers clients convenient, by appointment only, access to the services and expertise they have come to know and expect from Trustar Bank.
Since the Bank launched in 2019, Wilson Boulevard is the fourth Trustar Bank location in Northern Virginia and the seventh location in the Greater Washington market, joining locations in Washington D.C., Reston, Great Falls, and Tysons, VA and Potomac and Bethesda, MD.
First full-service branch in Maryland
Trustar Bank in Great Falls opens first full-service branch in Maryland
Feb 4, 2025
Trustar Bank in Great Falls has opened its first full-service branch in Maryland and received approval from regulators to open another in Arlington.
The young bank, which opened for business in 2019, announced Tuesday its Maryland branch is now up and running at 7901 Norfolk Ave. in Bethesda, in space that for years was occupied by the pizza restaurant Corner Slice. Corner Slice closed early last year and Trustar bought the roughly 1,000-square-foot property in mid-2024 for $1.075 million, according to a news report at the time.
Also on Tuesday, the bank won approval from Virginia and federal regulators to open another branch in Arlington, founder and CEO Shaza Andersen told me. Andersen said the location of the branch is still to be determined but that it will likely open sometime this year. Until then, Trustar plans to serve customers in and around Arlington via a temporary, by-appointment-only location at 3033 Wilson Blvd. in Clarendon.
With the opening of the Bethesda branch, Trustar now has four traditional branches — the others are in Great Falls, Reston and Tysons — as well appointment-only locations in Potomac and D.C. and a commercial lending office in Tysons.
Andersen said her plan since launching Trustar had always been to open branches across Greater Washington, not just Northern Virginia. She previously founded and ran WashingtonFirst Bank in Reston before selling it to Sandy Spring Bancorp in 2018 for $447 million, and that bank had more than a dozen branches in D.C., Northern Virginia and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
“We truly believe that to serve our customers we have to be in all three markets because it’s all one metropolitan area,” Andersen.
She added that while branches don’t need to be as large as they once were due to the rise in digital banking, they are still valuable for face-to-face meetings with clients — particularly business owners — and for overall branding.
Trustar has grown at a rapid clip since Andersen founded it a little over a year after selling WashingtonFirst. In less than six years, the bank has already amassed $961 million in assets, making it more than twice the size WashingtonFirst was at the same stage.
“What that tells me is that there was a real need for another community bank in the market,” Andersen said.
Trustar, which largely serves small and midsize businesses, reported a pretax profit of $2.5 million in 2024, up more than 150% from 2023. Total loans increased 25% year over year while deposits climbed 23%.
Andersen was honored as by the Business Journal as one of Greater Washington’s 100 most influential business leaders in 2022.
